Quezon City Bans Single-Use Plastics in Government Offices. A Bold Step Toward a Zero-Waste Future!
In a strong push for sustainability, the Quezon City government in the Philippines has banned all disposables and single-use plastics within City Hall and government-run establishments, effective April 21, 2025. Under Executive Order No. 3, Series of 2025, items like plastic bags, PET bottles, styrofoam, and disposable cutlery are prohibited. Employees must now use reusable containers and eco-bags, while food deliveries are only allowed if packaging is returned for recycling. Visitors may receive food in disposables but cannot bring them into buildings.
This directive reinforces the city’s Green Public Procurement Ordinance and highlights Quezon City’s commitment to reducing plastic waste and promoting a circular economy. Mayor Joy Belmonte emphasized the environmental and health dangers of microplastics, urging other institutions to follow suit. Non-compliance will result in penalties or formal reprimands for city employees and vendors.
